WELCOME to my new web site, it replaces MODEL BOAT DOCKYARD which has become obsolete due to technical issues and my expansion into model RAILWAYS.

The original website was the result of not being able to find a resource of GOOD modelling wood in New Zealand Native Timbers. Also as a Marine modeller the ability to obtain ship/boat fittings and tools from a single source.

After the sale of my Locksmith business I expanded into model Railways (A child hood dream). That ran side by side with the Model Boat Dockyard from a shop opposite the railway station in Station Road, Penrose hence the name of “Penrose Junction”.

After retirement I moved from Auckland to Wanganui where I purchased a property with a large workshop on the road frontage that has been converted into the shop.

I'm constantly looking for sources of supply and will be adding products as wholesalers come on board and support the shop.

It is also my hope that modellers from other disciplines will also find the site of use as a resource for modelling tools and supplies.

Thank you for looking at this site…………Happy Modelling.

Some more about me.

Geoff’s Model & Hobby Shop is a home based business owned by Geoff Chowles, an ex Marine Engineer from the off shore oil industry.

Geoff has been a keen model builder since childhood. He took up the hobby of model boat-ship building while living in the UK in the 70’s & 80’s.

As a first build, the Billing Boats “ZWATE ZEE” was chosen. The next model was of the MV “LUNDYSHORE” an offshore oil rig supply ship that he served on as an engineer.

As a first scratch build, a stand off semi-scale submarine was built from plans. There was then a gap of 25 years before he once more took up the hobby.

A Billing Boats kit of the “BLUENOSE II” was selected to see if he still has the skills, indeed he has. The next project was a scratch built semi-scale paddle steamer to sail on the S.M.M. club pond in Panmure, Auckland, while he builds a 1:75 scale model of the passenger/car ferry TSMV “BUTE” of Glasgow. This is also a scratch build.

At present Geoff is a retired locksmith.

His other interests are:- Vintage Jazz, Family History, Competitive Ballroom Dancing & playing Bridge.
